Photos, stories and ‘how I got the shot’ about birds and animals in the wild
A busy morning for our bluebirds. At least one pair of tree swallows is interested in the other nesting box on our deck and I put out a new mealworm feeder. Both bluebirds were keeping a watchful eye on the boxes and negotiating with the swallows. Mr. Bluebird stood on the second box for much of the morning, apparently trying to explain ‘go away.’ We’ve had both swallows and bluebirds before, but never with clutches at the same time. Let’s see if the bluebirds decide they want neighbors. Mrs. Bluebird’s keen eye had her snacking on mealworms about ten minutes after the feeder went up.
Today is the first day the chicks might hatch. We’ve probably got a few more days, but I’ll be watching.

Mrs. Bluebird continues to sit patiently on her five eggs. Dad has popped in a couple times to make sure she’s doing it right. The eggs should hatch sometime between tomorrow and May 9. Stay tuned!

Mrs. Bluebird continues to incubate her eggs. They should hatch sometime between May 1 and May 9.
This video shows Mrs. Bluebird sitting patiently for a bit, then turning the eggs before heading out for a snack. Birds turn their eggs to prevent the embryo from adhering to the side of the egg and to help distribute nutrients in the egg.

Mrs. Bluebird spent last night in the box sitting on her eggs. That means she’s started incubating them, they should hatch sometime between May 1 and May 9.
Sorry about the video quality. Guess I should have retired this box and build one with the updated design. The direct sunlight coming through the box’s opening is just too bright for the camera to handle. And, we had a network glitch that pixelated a portion of the video. I’ll hire an assistant so I have someone to fire over this.

Mrs. Bluebird caught me off guard this morning. She’s been sitting in the box since about 6:00 am, with Mr. Bluebird bringing her snacks a couple of times. I’d assumed she’d started incubating and even got a video up on YouTube saying that. Just as the video finished uploading, she left the box and I could see she’d laid a fifth egg.
Bluebirds can lay up to seven eggs in a clutch, we’ll have to keep watching to see if she’s done.

Mrs. Bluebird was busy this morning and laid a fourth egg. She may lay up to three more before she starts sitting on them.
We’re having a windy day and there is lots of wind noise. And, you can see that the camera can’t adjust to the bright light coming through the box’s opening. This was the first box I built with a camera. Later boxes were taller to reduce lens flare which also helped balance the light. I’ll encourage the birds to move to one of the newer boxes for their next clutch.

Momma bluebird is keeping on schedule and laid another egg this morning.
She should lay an egg a day until she has up to seven eggs. She’ll start sitting on them once they’re all laid.
I’m still hunting for critters to photograph. I’d love to know if you’ve got interesting critters hanging around.

A longer video today, I’m still experimenting to find the best way to serve up the videos. Feel free to let me know what works for you.

I was hoping for an Easter egg, but it looks like Mrs. Bluebird isn’t ready. She ducked into the box a few times this morning to put some finishing touches on her nest. She should start laying eggs any day.
I’m still searching for wildlife to photograph. Anyone have a fox, coyote or bobcat den? Have a bear coming and going regularly? I’d love to know!
